Today's the day! I lay awake in the darkness waiting for the buzz of the alarm clock. Finally it sounds, I spring from the bed and hurry through the morning rituals of preparation and rush to the common area. We gather for this morning's lesson of Law. The elders in charge of this level of our block lead the Gathered inhabitants through the reading of chosen portions of the city's Laws. New Laws have been enacted! Read, repeat, cherish, discuss, learn. What will the changes in vehicle certification bring? Are we up to date with the new health codes for food preparation (wich has been expected this past two weeks)? Have we seen anybody wearing the colors or sigils of this new 'seditious group'? A few passages of the Law are revisited, we pledge ourselves to the keeping of the Law as we have so proudly done for generations here in the Arthur Phil Dent habitat-block. Local news are read, chores assigned, the Assembled are reminded (needlesly) that today, as we have done every month, a group of "our sons and daughters having reached the appropiate age will go forth and seek the honor of being Tested for entrance into the Academy of Law" (at last ! my turn!), before, finally, breaking for breakfast. After what may be our last brakfast for many years with our family (should we be granted the honor to serve the City and Her Laws) ,we who have reached the age of five years this month are called together before the Elders, we are presented to our guides who will lead us through the City, we are given our last words of encouragement and reminded that regardless of what happens today our only Purpose, our only Destiny is to uphold the Law and to live by it. With the chanted blessings of the Elders resounding through the halls we are lead to the speedtubes that will deposit us outside to start our journey to the Academy of Law. We stand at our block's main entrance. Its all so amazing! At last we see with our own eyes this City we have so studied in map and holo. We stand with mouths agape ,mesmerized by the sights, the sounds, the scents, the complexity, the sheer immensity of this MegaCity we are blessed to live in, as Her humble servants. Fighting off the daze, we make our way through the City, observing all the rules of peatonal transit. Strugling to do our duty as citizens to note and memorize all the crimes we see and the descriptions of all perpetrators we observe, so that we may give propper citizen's reports to the Authorities. There!! On that Speedway! A pentad of Judges riding their Lawmasters intent upon their assigned duties! Overhead! A Hover-Tank proudly bearing the Eagle of the Department of Justice!! We are all sick with excitement and fear . Will we be deemed worthy? or will we be but mere civilians? Jors ,always the biggest of our class is strutting and preening as if he were already chosen (stupid brainless lump that he is) , Deren , skinny, clumsy, looks terrified just to be outside (but I've heard the Elders whispering amongst themselve that he may have the "Sight" and hasn't he always said that he has seen 'ghosts'?) will he be chosen to watch over our thoughts? But, I keep our lessons in mind!
Do not dream, do not fear, keep the Law in mind and Serve. I WILL do my
duty as a servant of the Law. There is nothing else for a citizen.
